Home battery & feed-in tariff action

Feed-in costs explained - and how to reduce them

During the day, your solar panels often generate more power than you consume directly. That power automatically goes back into the electricity grid. Most energy companies charge feed-in costs for this.

A common misunderstanding

Many people think these charges only apply to the electricity they generate more on an annual basis than they consume - i.e. only on the 'surplus' for which they receive a (low) feed-in tariff.
That sounds logical, but that's not how feed-in tariffs work.

How does it work in practice?

Most power companies charge a feed-in fee on all the power you feed back to the grid, regardless:
- whether you generate more or less than you consume on an annual basis
- whether that flow is later netted
- whether you receive feed-in compensation for it

Every kilowatt hour that leaves your home during the day and goes into the grid counts in the calculation.
The more you feed back, the higher the cost.

The solution: use more of your own power yourself

More and more households are therefore choosing to make smarter use of their solar energy. With a home battery, you store excess solar power and use it in the evening or when the sun is not shining. This reduces your feed-in as well as your feed-in costs.
